“I love you,” he said out of nowhere. Didn’t say it with a dot-dot-dot needing a “Ditto”. He just put it out there and smiled, like someone merely saying the sky is a beautiful blue.

And a surge of affection spread inside me, and threatened to overflow and carry with them the words, “I love you too,”- for the kind of person he was, and for his knowing and accepting this kind of person I am. For I am this person who will utter the L word of a cat, or cake or a book well wrote- but never to a human whose next sigh depends on it.

So I said “Thank you,” kissed his unexpectant lips and smiled back. Because “Thank You” is what you say, when given a beautifully wrapped gift, the contents of which, you have no comprehension of.
